If you’ve been approached by vendors promising to track your firm’s visibility in ChatGPT, Perplexity, or other AI assistants, you’re not alone. As AI-powered search grows, a cottage industry of “AI visibility” tools has emerged, each claiming to show you exactly how often your firm appears in AI-generated responses.
Before you sign that contract, there are fundamental limitations you need to understand. This isn’t about any single vendor being dishonest—it’s about the inherent constraints of measuring something that current technology simply cannot measure with precision.
What Does AI Visibility Mean for Law Firms?
AI visibility refers to a content’s likelihood of being found, understood, and used by AI systems (particularly large language models) when they respond to user prompts and queries. It is similar to SEO in that it relies on structure to allow systems to interpret both the content and intent behind it.
This matters for law firms because as AI tools continue to grow in popularity, people have begun using AI as a replacement for traditional search engines. The more these tools improve, the more trust people will place in them.
This means if an AI suggests your firm is the best in a specific area, people who trust the tool are more likely to turn to you. AI visibility, therefore, provides a fresh and untapped platform to expand a firm’s reach.
Can AI Visibility Be Measured?
The problem, however, is that because AI technology is still young, there is still no standardized metric for much of what values we need to measure. AI visibility is among these.
There are proxies available, yes (retrieval accuracy, structured metadata coverage, etc.), but an industry standard that measures how well you rank among AI searches? None has yet been established.

Synthetic Query Testing
Visibility tools run predetermined prompts through AI systems and record which brands get mentioned. The problem? This tells you what could happen with those specific prompts, not what actually happens with real user queries.
Real users phrase questions in countless ways, and AI responses are highly sensitive to exact wording, with a slight change in how someone asks a question affecting the answer. AI systems update frequently, and visibility can shift between measurement periods without any surfaced explanation. In high-temperature systems, identical prompts may yield different outputs across runs, while more low-temperature systems can remain stable even as real-world conditions change.

When someone uses ChatGPT in a mobile app and taps a link, that handoff to a browser frequently strips referrer headers entirely. The visit appears as “direct” traffic in GA4—indistinguishable from someone who typed your URL directly. Because this behavior is common across many app-to-browser flows, a significant portion of AI-assisted discovery is likely misattributed and nearly invisible.
Privacy Headers Block Attribution
Many AI platforms intentionally set privacy headers that prevent destination sites from knowing the traffic source. This is a feature, not a bug, from their perspective. From yours, it means the data simply doesn’t exist.

AI assistants have a different value proposition—they’re trying to be the answer, not direct users to your site. Their incentive to help you understand citation patterns is significantly weaker.
As for local AI results—meaning AI responses that are genuinely personalized by geography, the way Google local pack results are—this remains speculative. Current AI systems can incorporate location signals, but we’re likely several years away from AI search having robust, verifiable local results that businesses can meaningfully optimize for and measure.
What Actually Works Right Now
This isn’t to say you should ignore AI entirely. But your approach should be grounded in what’s measurable and proven.
Continue Good Traditional SEO Practices
Google still handles the vast majority of search queries. Depending on the study, Google represents 85-92% of search volume. This is despite the 25-30% drop in traditional search engine volume due to AI growth, and will likely remain true for years.
The signals that help you rank in Google—authoritative content, strong local signals, consistent NAP information, quality reviews—are the same signals that AI systems tend to pull from when they need information. Good SEO is good AI positioning by default.
Strengthen Your Brand Signals
AI systems favor entities they can confidently identify. This means consistent branding across your website, Google Business Profile, legal directories, and review platforms. The clearer and more consistent your digital footprint, the more likely AI systems are to surface your firm with confidence.
Create Genuinely Authoritative Content
AI systems are trained on and retrieve from content across the web. Original, substantive content that demonstrates expertise—not keyword-stuffed pages—is what gets incorporated into AI training data and retrieval systems. Think about what a highly informed person would want to cite, not what a search algorithm might rank.
Track What You Can Track

AI search is real and growing. Your firm should be aware of it. But awareness doesn’t mean chasing every new monitoring tool or believing claims that can’t be verified.
The most sensible approach right now is to continue investing in proven SEO strategies that have measurable results, while understanding that doing SEO well is likely the best preparation for AI visibility when that channel does become measurable.
Google isn’t going anywhere. The fundamentals of local search visibility—authority, relevance, proximity—aren’t going anywhere. Build on what works, stay informed about what’s emerging, and be appropriately skeptical of anyone selling certainty in a space defined by uncertainty.
